Dear all,
As you’re aware, Hotwired III will be taking place next week, and I’m looking forward to catching up with many of you there. It’s shaping up to be a pretty awesome meeting!
As part of the Hotwired programme, next Wednesday (13 Nov) we have a two hour long evening VOEvent/TDIG splinter session. This is our chance to dive a little deeper into some of the more technical or long-term projects that the TDIG has an interest in. So far, I’m planning to include the following:
- A review of current/upcoming TDIG documentation (VTP, SimpleTimeSeries, RegExt, etc);
- Longer term evolution of the VOEvent standard: where do we see ourselves going beyond the documents which are currently on the table? What is needed to support LSST style scenarios? This could include:
* Do we need to evolve beyond VOEvent 2 (eg moving to different, non-XML, serialization, or providing different ways of embedding content)?
* Do we need to look at more advanced transport protocols? VTP is intentionally bare bones; is it (plus containers?) all we need provide, or should we look at a higher-level infrastructure?
* I am (perennially) worried about security, and in particular the dangers of automatic response to completely unauthenicated events. I periodically worry about this in public, and nobody else seems concerned; maybe one day I’ll get the message, but for now I intend to try it again.
* .. other issues?
- An opportunity for members of the audience to give “lightning” presentations on relevant tools, technologies or applications that might be of interest to the wider audience. For example, I will give a brief overview & example of Comet (the broker/transport system I’ve been working on), and can demo some of the VOEvent parsing/handling tools that my colleagues in the LOFAR transients project have been putting together.
To you, then, I ask:
1. What else should be on this agenda?
2. Would you be interested in giving a “lightning” talk? While it’s not required to sign up in advance, it would be helpful to know if there’s enough material to support this idea.
Cheers,
John
