Registry Provider Telecon

Goals: 
  *  decide on a schedule for coordinating our upgrades
  *  determine what we need to do upgrades
  *  understand how we will get to bringing v1.0 on-line

We refered to the RegUpgradeSummer2006 twiki page
(http://www.ivoa.net/twiki/bin/view/IVOA/RegUpgradeSummer2006). 

I.  Roadmap

Updated schedule:

  o  23 June:  comments on schemas, RI spec in to the list 
  o  26 June:  corrected schemas and RI spec posted
  o   1 July:  registry-of-registries ready (Ray)
  o  15 July:  early search interface implementation ready (Kevin)
  o  31 July:  upgraded registries ready for testing
  o  15 Aug:  turn on upgraded registries

Note from the US-VO: if we miss the 15 August target by even a day,
  it's recommended that postpone the upgrade until after the summer
  school.  We should have an indication by 31 July whether we can make
  the deadline.  If we can't, we will have to figure out how to handle
  this in the summer school based on where things are.  

Note from ESAC (Aurelien):  This is a very tight schedule for him.  We
  note that getting all registries up for testing by 31 July is not
  required--just a critical mass.  

II.  Standard Review

1.  Schemas

 *  The current release of the schemas are posted to
      RegUpgradeSummer2006
 *  Still need SkyNode, SSA, and CEA; Kevin, Paul Harrison & Ray are
      in discussion regarding CEA.
 *  Post comments to list by Friday 23 June!
 *  Aurelien has some comments now; will post to list
 *  Versioning for VODataService, its dependents, and VORegistry:
      +  VODataService dependents=SIA, ConeSearch
      +  currently at 0.9
      +  comments on current release posted Friday 23 June.
      +  schemas will be updated accordingly by 26 June; the versions
           will be changed to 1.0
      +  VODataService scheduled for PR in October; if there are minor
           changes, they will be incorporated without a version
           change.  If there are major changes, we will move to v1.1
           (which will require adjustments to our registries).  
      +  Thus, it is vital to get changes in now!

2.  Registry Interface

 *  Latest version available on RegistryInterface twiki page
      (http://www.ivoa.net/twiki/bin/view/IVOA/RegistryInterface);
      grab from the attachment list at the bottom of page.  
 *  Kevin is incorporating comments from Aurelien; Kevin will post a
      summary of changes, including specific bits discussed today.
 *  Post comments to list by Friday 23 June!

III.  Implementations

1.  Stylesheet

 *  Support not yet included for SkyNodes, SSA, CEA
 *  We will all use stylesheets at least as a guide; Tom will use
      stylesheet to convert all his static files.  
 *  There is no strong need for a stylesheet that translates from v1.0
      to v0.10 at this time.  It may be helpful later on for
      supporting legacy clients.  
 *  Registries will only be responsible for converting records that
      they manage (not harvested records).  

2.  Registry of Registries

 *  the RofR will be brought on line early--by 1 July--to provide a
      harvestable registry that we can test our harvesters against.  
 *  it will include some nominal checking of the harvesting
      interface.  Full checking will have to come later.

3.  Client Search Software

 *  it will be helpful to have an early release of the client software
      for searching as a means to test our implementations.  
 *  to get this client software tested, we need an early
      search interface implementation available.  Kevin thinks that he
      can get this up for one of his smaller registries by early to
      mid-July.  We set a target date for this of 15 July.
 *  Ray and Kevin will coordinate the client code testing.  (Anyone
      else interested in being involved in this?)

4.  Dates

31 July:  Implementations available for testing.
1-14 August:  Testing

IV.  Transition to V1.0

1.  Old Versions

 *  We will need to keep our previous interfaces up at their current
      URLs for sometime into the future to support clients that
      haven't upgraded yet.  
 *  New implementations will generally have new URL endpoints
 *  The VOResource schemas allow one to register both the new and old
      interfaces in the same record.  Ray will update stylesheet to do
      this automatically.  

2.  Web page interfaces

 *  Aurelien noted that at some point the default web page interface
      will be switched to the new underlying interface
 *  Sebastien noted that the IAU Meeting is Aug. 14-25; there will
      certainly be demos.  We recommend that clients and registry web
      pages continue to support the old interface during this period.  
 *  More discussion is likely to be needed on when/how we migrate
      our web page interfaces.  

3.  Turning on new the versions

 *  Turn on date is Tuesday 15 August. 
 *  We will clean out all harvested records and start afresh with only
      the ones locally managed/published.  
 *  We begin harvesting from all other registries.  

V.  Wrap-up

We expect to have another telecon in mid-July to discuss progress.
The current time and number is okay with everyone.  

Ray spoke with Yuji regarding JVO's registry.  They are still on v0.8
of the schemas; thus, they are not harvesting now.  They are happy to
upgrade on a later schedule.
