I agree completely: not having this written down is a hindrance to sharing 
experience.  I also agree (if I read you correctly) that rapid prototyping 
does not encourage documentation.  This is why I never finished the 
VOResource tutorial (http://nvo.ncsa.uiuc.edu/VO/WD-RMSchemas.html): both 
the pressure to get things working and the concern that these 
proto-standards are still changing discouraged me.
