Dear DSP members and IVOA,
Please note that the June IVOA Interoperability Meeting will be held at the University of Maryland from the 2nd to the 6th of June 2025. Remote participation will also be supported. We encourage you to register on the meeting website if you plan to attend, whether in person or virtually.
We, as chairs of the newly named Distributed Services and Protocols (DSP) Working Group (formerly known as GWS - Grid and Web Services), are reaching out early to invite your contributions to the DSP sessions during this upcoming interop.
This name change reflects the evolving scope of our working group, which continues to build upon the foundations laid by the former Grid and Web Services group. The Distributed Services and Protocols Working Group is dedicated to investigating, developing, and recommending protocols and standards that foster broad interoperability across a diverse range of functionalities, including but not limited to:
* Authentication and Authorization: Establishing secure and consistent methods for user authentication and authorization across platforms, enabling single sign-on capabilities and granular access control.
* Credential Delegation: Facilitating secure delegation of user credentials, allowing authorized applications and services to access resources on behalf of users without sharing sensitive login information.
* Workflow Execution and Management: Defining protocols for interoperable workflow descriptions, execution, and monitoring, enabling researchers to seamlessly port and share complex analysis pipelines across different platforms.
* Workflow Analysis and Provenance: Developing standards for capturing and exchanging workflow provenance information, enabling reproducibility and facilitating collaborative analysis of scientific results.
* User Data Interchange and User Areas: Establishing secure and efficient mechanisms for sharing and synchronizing user data and personalized settings across platforms, ensuring a consistent user experience.
* Execution Interfaces and APIs: Defining standardized APIs and interfaces for accessing platform functionalities, promoting code reusability and simplifying integration efforts.
* Cloud Technologies and Deployment: Addressing interoperability challenges related to cloud-based deployments, including containerization, resource management, and data transfer.
For the upcoming interop, we welcome contributions (remote or in-person) that address any of these areas. This could include:
* Presentations on implementations and deployments of distributed services and protocols.
* Sharing experiences as users or developers working with relevant standards or tools.
* Updates on the progress of existing standards or proposals for new ones within the DSP scope.
* Demonstrations of use cases that highlight the benefits of interoperability in distributed astronomical environments.
* Discussions on challenges, future directions, and potential new areas of focus for the Distributed Services and Protocols Working Group.
If you are interested in presenting, please send us your proposed contribution to us with the following details:
* Your name
* A tentative title for your presentation
* Ideally, a brief abstract outlining the content of your talk
If you are unsure about the suitability of your topic or are a first-time contributor, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are happy to discuss your ideas and provide guidance.
We look forward to a productive and engaging DSP session at the June Interoperability Meeting!
