Hi,

The Herschel observatory mission discussed a data model for quantity about
two years ago and one of the instruments has gone ahead and is using the
following open source implementation:

I am not suggesting in any way that we want to follow suit but it is
always worth considering other peoples implementations of the wheel before
embarking on your own, even if they seem square.
