It is a pain even if you do not do transformations.  Our searches are
optimized for shapes with great circle boundaries.  RANGE does not
feel like something that should be in a 'simple' protocol.  As you
noted, for simple cases the functionality is redundant with POLYGON.
For complicated cases, that is why we have TAP and ADQL.
