Hi everyone,

I won't be able to make the next meeting (regardless of the specific
schedule) since I'm about to disappear for a three week vacation, so I
wanted to send a bit of an update of what I'm working on and what my
upcoming plans are.

I'm currently extensively revising our SODA service, implementing the
existing protocol, to separate out as much code as possible into a
reusable library. I am nearly but not entirely done with that and hope to
finish it when I return from vacation, after which our plan is to develop
some additional services based on that same underlying library. While
that is in progress, I hope to add to that library an implementation of a
new JSON-based protocol in such a way that any service written using that
library can support both the old and new protocols.

Unless someone beats me to starting this, my tentative plan was to start
trying to draft the rough beginnings of four documents at the same time as
that library work:

* A document explaining the separation between service protocol and
  network encoding
* A protocol document for SODA
* A protocol document for UWS, VOSI, and the service pieces of DALI
* A network encoding document for JSON

SODA is not an obvious choice for other purposes, but it's a convenient
choice for me personally since it's the code base that I have already
available to play with.

I'll check in when I get back and adjust the plan based on what other
folks have been working on in the interim. My guess is that the earliest
I'll be able to start on writing documents will be the middle of July, and
that's subject to the normal "estimating software development is hard"
caveats.
