Hi all,

I was assigned with an action at our last meeting to lead the IVOA website
review and ask others to help review the website. So far, I've mostly
reviewed the "For Astronomers" and "About" pages, focusing on content
mostly; I haven't thought much about a new website layout/look-and-feel.
Here are my notes to share:

Google doc:
https://docs.google.com/a/cfa.harvard.edu/document/d/1STwy_mQsIURWBN0tnnzqw9MdWrkpRk5O3IWcPc2ERvk/edit?usp=sharing
text:  (attached)

I haven't reviewed the Developers pages in depth. I mostly checked for
broken links.
** Would someone like to take the lead on reviewing the Developers pages? **

The Members pages look fine to me, so I didn't write much about those in my
notes.

Please feel free to add your notes and comments anywhere in the Google
document. Or you can send your notes in another doc or email -- either's
fine with me. I can round up the notes into a clean doc and share them
afterwards.

Hmmm... thinking about it, would it make sense to make a page on the IVOA
wiki for the Media Group? That would be a good platform to have the website
review discussions on, put our documents on, etc.

Thanks,
Jamie

Please feel free to add your comments to this document. You can add them to the sections that are already written, or you can make new sections with your notes.
Main questions

* Who is our audience?
   * currently, it looks like it's supposed to be astronomers, developers, and members
   *

* What do we want to astronomers to get out of this website?
   *

* Do we want to keep this as a static reference site (one that doesn’t change much) or do something more dynamic (news, posts)?
   *

* Since we have a media group, there should be some spot on the website to link to facebook, twitter, wechat, weibo...
   * Do we want a twitter feed anywhere on the site? Not sure if it will answer the question “What do we want to convey on this website”
   * Current Website Content Review
I didn’t find too much old information on the website. I’ve only written notes on the pages I found old info, or need some obvious updates. If anyone sees pages that need updates, please add them to the document or send the media group an email with your notes.

Getting Started
http://www.ivoa.net/astronomers/getting_started.html
* Data Discovery Tool is old -- needs to point to MAST
* Are there more / newer tools we’d want to showcase here?

Using the VO
http://www.ivoa.net/astronomers/using_the_vo.html

* I like the information on this page. It should be better organized though:
   * Add links to examples throughout the text. Add some pictures to spice it up.
   * Tab out / bullet the points listed in "Types of data service(s)"
   * Give examples of "Registry Searching". There are no links -- provide some links, and show an example
   * Bigger/more obvious links to “Getting Started” and “VO tools and portals”

VO Applications for Astronomers
http://www.ivoa.net/astronomers/applications.html

* **Haven’t reviewed the applications list since ~Nov 2016** There may be some dead links. For example, the Time Series Search Tool link points to a deprecated website and tool launcher.
* Is there a better way to list the tools? I like that they’re organized alphabetically and by context. Maybe a refreshed layout of the tables could help.

The VO for Students and the Public
http://www.ivoa.net/astronomers/vo_for_public.html

* Not a IVOA site issue, but the EuroVO page hasn't been updated since 2015 if anyone knows someone in charge of that site
* Any more examples? We should have more inputs to put on here after ADASS/IVOA. There’s a citizen science in the VO BoF talk that we can get ideas for.

What is the IVOA
http://www.ivoa.net/about/what-is-ivoa.html

* Do we have an updated Technical Assessment and Roadmap document? This one is from 2012.
   * There are other roadmap documents that are newer, but they don’t look as ‘official’ as the 2012 Technical Assessment and Roadmap document. Is there a newer technical document in the works that we could put on the IVOA page?

IVOA Contacts
http://www.ivoa.net/about/contacts.html

* make sure IVOA Contacts are up to date

Who is involved?
http://www.ivoa.net/about/member-organizations.html

* Make sure image is up to date
   * is AU VO image up to date? looks different than the image on their homepage
   * BRAVO isn't on the image (Brazil)
   * JVO's image doesn't match the image on their homepage
* Make sure list is up to date, and that pointers work
   * Hungarian VO website link not working
   * the RVO english page has nothing on it. Perhaps we should just link to the Russian version? http://www.inasan.ru/organizational-activity/rvo/
   * Some notes on the VO websites:
         * EURO-VO is a little outdated (last news item from 2015)
         * France VO website: half the links don't work for me

Make sure about/member-contacts.html is up-to-date
