Just came across an interesting comment from Tim O'Reilly:
  "I remember bringing Fred Baker, the chair of the IETF, to the second open
source summit, and asking him what advice he could give to the Open source
community, and it was essentially what you said above: standardize as little
as possible, just enough to ensure interoperability."
