For full field single observations there is the obsid + obi combination (same as the main data archive) , and for full field observation stacks we use the detect stack id. For individual observation detections we use the combination obsid + obi + region id, and for stack detections detecting stack id + region id. Finally, for sources we have source name. The relationship between observation detection and stack detection is many:one and between stack detection and source name is many:many.</div><div><br></div><div>TAP can in principle be used to query the catalog tables (and is used under the hood) but given the multiple tables (there are a total of 9 tables: 3 primary tables, 2 associations tables, 3 stack tables, and 1 limiting sensitivity table) and the many:many relationships between the various table entries these queries can quickly become messy. SCS queries are often not that useful given many users want to search for catalog sources or detections by constraints on properties rather than by position (although there are definitely users who just want to know if there is a detected X-ray source at their favorite position).</div><div><br></div><div>You are right that the catalog tables will never be part of ObsCore. However the data products are a different beast. I think the headbanger here is that we consider the data products that were created as part of catalog processing to be part of the catalog. Most organizations would describe the catalog as just the tables and the data products would be just a set of higher level data products (from which the data in the catalog tables was extracted). The CSC tables will not be part of obscure, only the observations. The stack products link straightforwardly to the CSC itself. And the source list will link to obscure products using a few nested SQL selects on the different ID tables. AFAIK, we can do all of Ian’s use cases this way, thought I admit we haven’t yet implemented it much less tested it.
