Dear André, dear all,

I've read what José Enrique answered to your message and I totally
agree with him.
In my opinion the activity related to workflows within the IVOA
through the GWS has to be preserved. Not only, but we have to make
any effort to enforce contacts and common actions and initiatives
between the GWS in IVOA and workflow related projects, those
currently active like ER-flow as well as future projects that
could be funded and approved.

Unfortunately I were not able to be active for this interop
meeting; I'm not attending it due to a number of urgent activities
that I'm processing in these weeks (including the review of the
first year of ER-flow), but I count to get in touch again with
you and with the other members of the GWS to continue what we have
done in Heidelberg.

The trend for the near future in my opinion is the need to have
smart workflows in place to process the high volume of
astronomical data federated in the Virtual Observatory and
distributed computing e-Infrastructures that can be used to run
these workflows. For this reason I think that the GWS will play a
key role from now on; it would be a real pity to disband the GWS
now.

So, I strongly support the creation of an interest group and I'm
obviously interested in participating in it if we think that this
is useful/necessary in this phase, and in any case I support any
other initiative aimed at continuing the workflow-related
activities within the Virtual Observatory.

Dear André, have a nice stay in Hawaii.

Hi André, all

as you know, I have been quite active in last Interops
with talks related to the work undertaken in the
WorkflowsForEver (Wf4Ever) project [1][2]. In this context
we have produced tools like AstroTaverna plugin [3],
contributed to the development of PDL for the
self-desciption and semantic interoperability of services,
as well as with implementations of PDL-clients, and started
collaborations with other projects like the SpanishVO,
ER-Flow, and VAMDC (and I would like to read in this thread
what they have to say :) Though Wf4Ever finishes this year,
these other projects have still a way to go, as many others,
just as the IVOA itself that I think it should be there for
new workflows-related projects to come.

I know SpanishVO is interested in adapting use cases for
VO-discovery and VO-data handling to workflows, and we will
help them with our AstroTaverna plugin. ER-Flow has also
interest in porting VO use cases to its infrastructure, and
VAMDC would like to integrate its Taverna plugins with ours,
with PDL support. I have also being in contact with HELIO
project, which has developed their own internal workflows,
they maybe have something to say here in this mail-thread
wrt. workflows in the VO.

Inside IVOA, I think we may reach workflows-related
subjects through several working groups (applications,
semantics, gws, dal, kdd..), my experience is that workflows
do not only work with asynchronous web services, but also
synchronous or not web services at all (local data
handling). I'm convinced the data volumes to be produced
soon will force the next generation of VO archives to
implement workflows techniques (not only for techies but
also for final users/astronomers) With this optic, I would
be in favor of creating an interest group if there is
critical mass for that now, or waiting for the right moment
inside the GWS working group.

These are my 2c. though I would very much like to hear
others.

For those of you attending to the Interop these days,
please have fun in Hawaï :)

Cheers !

During the last IVOA meeting in Heidelberg we had a
session dedicated to workflows.

We had interesting talks but not really time for a
discussion.

A work, PDL (Parameter Description Language) leaded
by Carlo Maria Zwölf, has an useful application in
workflows.

An IVOA Note was also published.

A few open questions : do we need to go further in
this domain ? if yes what do you need (in the scope
of the GWS Working Group, in other WG ?) ? if not do
you mean that this topic is not really in the scope
of the IVOA ?

All remarks welcome.

I will make a summary of the answers during the next
IVOA meeting in Hawaii.

Thanks for any input.
