This is hat happens when you try to use the class hierarchy to contain 
(IMO) too much information. I would have thought that 10s to 100s of
subclasses, all in the same package, would alert them to a design choice
that may need some moderation. Basically, it looks like they flattened the 
various combinations of things into a really cumbersome class hierarchy.

OTOH, they were thorough!
