(with apologies for multiple copies due to cross-posting - I am trying to
cast a wide net)
Dear Colleagues,
Two years from now I hope to be retired - probably as of the end of
2016 or the beginning of 2017. In order to achieve a seamless
transition, we are currently advertising the position of a Deputy
Archive Astrophysicist who, if all works out, would be in a good
position to apply for the job of Lead Archive Astrophysicist for the
Chandra Data Archive (CDA) in the Chandra X-ray Center at the
Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory at that time.
The emphasis for this position is on archive operations and
representing the archive in the world of data repositories within and
beyond SAO. The successful candidate will be expected to actively
participate in the collaborative work of organizations like the
Astrophysics Datacenters Executive Council (ADEC - the collaboration
of NASA data centers), the International Virtual Observatory Alliance
(IVOA), the US Virtual Observatory Alliance (USVOA, under the auspices
of the AAS), the Research Data Alliance (RDA), as well as working with
the Astrophysics Data System (ADS, at SAO) on bibliographic projects
related to the CDA and with the Smithsonian Digitization Office on
SI-wide digitization efforts.
Consequently, although the position is advertized as an
Astrophysicist, Data Scientists may also qualify. The general
requirements are a degree in astronomy, physics, mathematics, computer
science, or data science; experience in data management and data
archive architectures in the context of a research environment in the
physical sciences; and research experience in any of the
above-mentioned fields. Knowledge of, and experience in, astrophysics
will be valued, but may not be required, depending on other skills and
qualifications.

Cheers,
- Arnold
