Mark,

There was many discussions about the choice of this suffix.
As it can represents various elment types we looked for a name not referring to any usual quantity. Thus npix or ndim have been 
discarded. The 2 last candidates were _xel and _nel and we finally kept _xel. I couldn't remember why.
As your request for changing it is not very strong and according to the fact that Pat already have an implementation, I would 
suggest to keep it as it is.
