Petr - have a look at the proposed MODE parameter for SIAV2; it does
exactly what you suggest (this is described in section 3.1.4.1 of
http://wiki.ivoa.net/internal/IVOA/SiaInterface/WD-SIAP-2.0-20130812.pdf).

In short, if you do a discovery query, by default you get the whole
dataset (image or spectrum).  If you query with MODE="cutout", the same
query params (e.g. BAND) are used, but you get a reference to a cutout
virtual dataset.  Assuming of course, that the service has this
capability.
