Complete end-to-end test using SSAP (SPLAT, DALServer)

Hi All -

The first complete end-to-end test of the new SSA protocol was
performed several days ago. This uses the Starlink SPLAT Java-based
spectral analysis client (from Peter Draper at Durham) to read SDSS
spectra from the JHU spectrum services, via my own DALServer-based SSAP
proxy service. The entire million+ spectra archive can be *searched
using the draft V1.0 SSAP protocol*, and spectra can be downloaded and
viewed within the SPLAT client. Spectra are transferred in *VOTable
format, compliant with the current Spectrum data model*.

To find out more about SPLAT, or to download the SSAP-enabled test
version, go here:

     http://star-www.dur.ac.uk/~pdraper/splat/splat-vo/

To make this work with test SSAP services which have not yet been
registered, you will also need the file attached to this message.
Just copy this to ~/.splat/SSAPServerListV2.xml, and the SPLAT client
should then find the referenced SSAP services.

More information on the SSAP V1.0 compliant proxy service for SDSS
used for these tests is available here:

     http://webtest.aoc.nrao.edu/ivoa-dal

where one can do a test query to find additional information such as
the service URL.

While this is a complete end-to-end test using the SSAP query interface
and Spectrum data model compliant spectra, no attempt has been made
yet to fully exercise all the query parameters and detailed dataset
metadata, although you will be able to browse the metadata in SPLAT
following a successful query. Likewise, no attempt has been made
to optimize the speed of spectra downloads, e.g., protocol level
compression is not used.
