Doug,
Sorry, I wasn't clear enough. Our goal is to study the connection between
features in the spatial distribution of stellar population properties:
age/metallicity gradients, distinct cores, etc.; and kinematical features in
velocity fields: discs, 3D dynamical structures, etc; and possibly also with
features in brightness/color maps.
One of the advantages of IFU over long-slit is that you will probably
not miss the kinematical major/minor axes, that may happen for long-slit
observations of early-type galaxies. We study diffuse (dwarf) ellipticals
and sometimes such problems occur.

One more point: this science case can't be done in the VO right now with the
present Spectral Data Model 0.93beta even for 1D data because we can't
describe the spectral resolution and its variations over the spectral
coordinate properly.
With best regards,
Igor
