Contribution to SIA evolution

For discussion in the DAL session of the next Interoperabilty
meeting in Strasbourg
a contribution by F.Bonnarel, CDS and AVO (2003/09/30).
This document intends to show that a couple of limitations we encounter
using SIAP for description of heterogeneous set of data could be easilly
overcome by slight modifications in the protocol for example in version 1.1
We will first describe 2 cases of heterogeneous data, then see how we can
express this in SIAP1.0. We'll then observe some limitations on that and try
to find some solutions by minimal modifications to SIAP
1 Two exemples of heterogeneous data sets
a example in Aladin
As a first example just have a look of the kind of data the Aladin
server can provide around the position of bright stars 72 tauri or Ups Tauri
in the Hyades Cluster
The answer consists of 3 observations of 2MASS at different wavelengths
a POSSI E observation scanned in DSS1
three POSSII observations scanned in DSS2 at different wavelengths and
a POSSII J observation scanned with the mama facility
What kind of outputs can we provide for these data? Currently the 2MASS
are provided as Atlas images , uncentered standalone pieces of sky
The next version of Aladin (planned for ADASS) will provide also mosaics
centered on the position of interest for that.
The DSS2 and MAMA observations can be provided as full resolution cutouts
of fixed dimension (a limitation which will disappear rather soon) or as
full Schmidt plate previews delivered in an Atlas mode.
DSS1 observation can be provided in the same state, but in addition
we propose also an intermediate resolution level ( ~ 7 arcsec by pixel)
which we deliver in cutout mode. We will probably never provide interplates
mosaics in that case (because it gives bad results due to inacurate astrometry
on the edges of the plates, and is generally not necessary because of wide
overlap between plates).
All the DSS and MAMA observations can be delivered uncompressed
(In FITS) or in JPEG. it is not yet the case for 2MASS data.
Of course we would like to get information about the availibility
of these data in one single request.
b example in Skyview
For 72 tauri, Skyview provides the following list of observations:

For all (or some) of these data Skyview is able to provide GIF and FITS
outputs, to modify the color table of the GIF file, to change the Projection,
etc ... Presently the Skyview SIAP Interface only provides the FITS/GNOMONIC
version. To be able to provide more, Skyview would have had to create
a large bunch of lines for each of these surveys.
2 SIAP 1.0 outputs ans Limitations
How would appear these data in SIAP 1.0 protocol? If we take the example of
Aladin we will first need to define an Atlas image service which will
distribute 2MASS data as well as DSS1, DSS2 and mama plates previews.
It will provide the following kind of output:

For the cutouts we will need to define another service (ie another URL) which
will provide another list of images:
See Output 2 at the end of this document.
This approach works but it presents a couple of limitations for an
heterogeneous service like ours.
The first limitation is to have several URL (one for each service type) for
our service. We would prefer to keep all the different kinds of outputs
together.
The second limitation is that for the same observation (even the same piece
of sky in the cutout or mosaic cases) we can have a lot of outputs according
to the various options of "processing" for a given "observation"
The third one is that the geometry of the outputs cannot be defined without
having some idea of the limits and astrometry of the image. Let's look at
this point in more details.
The Geometric parameters are:
POS, SIZE, INTERSECT, together with The image generation parameters NAXIS,
CFRAME, EQUINOX, CRPIX, CRVAL, CDELT, ROTANG, PROJ
We can distinguish the effect of these parameters according to the kind
of service we are facing (Archive/Pointed Images, Cutout, and mosaic)
For Archive/Pointed Image services, actually, the NAXIS, CFRAME, EQUINOX,*
CRPIX, CRVAL, CDELT, ROTANG, PROJ parameters have no effect on the output
of these services. POS, SIZE (seen as a radius or dimensions of the ROI) and
INTERSECT are the only efficient ones.
For mosaic services on the other side, these parameters are in
principal fully efficient and not limited in theory. Only practical reasons
(network transfer time, computation time) can lead to upper limits on NAXIS
for example (limits defined by the server). So we can predefine the output
image generation parameters as it is decribed in the SIAP 1.0 document.
In the case of the cutout service , however we really need to know
geometric information on the observation before defining the image generation
parameters. Actually the definition of the image of interest is the result of
a negociation. In that case, we would like to have an URL template
instead of a simple URL on the Image_AccessReference field.
3 propositions for SIAP 1.1
We propose the following evolution
a Service type:
In the Image_AccessReference field we will find an URL template
with A SERVICETYPE parameter defined as a variable in the template designated
by $SERVICETYPE with "ImageAtlas", "Cutout", "Mosaic" as possible values.
b Processing parameters:
Again for the Image_AccessReference field we should add a few
parameters as variables in the URL template preceded by a $.
We propose a MODE parameter with "ORIGIN" (for original pixels),
"RESAMP", or "MOSAIC" as possible values.
We propose a COMPRESSION parameter with "NONE", "JPEG", "HCOMP",
"MRCOMP" as possible values.
We propose a RESOLUTION parameter with "FULL", "PREVIEW" and
"INTERMEDIATE" as possible values.
As was pointed out at the beginning, we can have different possibilities
of processing for different subset of Observations. This means we could need a
VOTABLE RESOURCE for each combination of parameters.
We can define a VOTABLE "PARAM" element for each servicetype or processing
parameter and give the list of possible values of this parameter in the
character value attribute of this element.
Another solution would be to define this parameter as a new field in the
output table. The list of possible values for an observation will be
given in the appropriate field of the corresponding record.
c Geometry: We propose to use the SIAP 1.0 IGP as variables in the
template URL with the same meaning.
The range of possible values has to be computed by the client according
to the astrometry of the image.
A more long-term consequence of these new definitions is to have only one
line by "Observation" in the output. This is a good first step towards
factorisation of metadata. Some of the details common to several "Observations"
such as "ObservingProgram" details could be deported to other resources and
just refered in the main "Observation" records. This paves the way
towards a convergence between SIAP and a hierarchical organisation of
metadata such as the one we tested with the IDHA experiment, the starting
point of this hierarchy being an "Observation".
We present now the kind of output we could obtain in the Aladin case with
this modification (Output 3). Some of the proposed Modifications have been
enhanced by ************** lines.
