Simple Spectral Access Use Cases

Data Providers (e.g., data centers, archives)

    - Data provider name:
	NOAO and CFLIB project

    - Spectral data collections from this source
Indo-U.S. Library of Coude Feed Stellar Spectra

    - Characteristics of data (number of spectra, size, irregularly sampled,
nonsampled (as in HE/UV) multiple flux arrays, variance arrays, etc.)
There are/will be a variety of data products. As a summary:
	1. Linearized, spliced, normalized flux:
	    1300 spectra, 15000 pixels, 3465-9469A @ 0.44A/pix
	2. Individual exposures in 1D array with non-linear sampling:
	    1300 stars, ~5 pieces/star, 3065 pixels @ 0.44A/pix
	3. Same as (2) but in observed counts.
	4. Variance arrays for all in this or next version
	5. Headers and database provide Simbad and physical parameters.
The library was designed to sample a wide variety of stellar
	    parameters: Teff, log(g), [Fe/H].

    - Current data storage format
	FITS simple image, FITS MEF
Simple linear WCS, IRAF non-linear multispec WCS

    - Is the data available online?
First ftp release in the next couple of months.

    - Other comments
The paper is being written. The first release will likely be
by FTP. In the longer term this will be a good library for
archive and web service access. Will eventually become part of
	the NOAO Science Archive.

Data Consumers (e.g., analysis packages, e.g., VO demonstrations that might
want to add the ability to fetch and display a spectrum)

    - Name of application, package, demo, etc.
	 NOAO/IRAF

    - Summarize capabilities of software
Full featured for viewing and analysis. Includes SPECTOOL, a
	 powerful windows-GUI browsing application.

    - Desired characteristics of input data
FITS or ascii, FITS WCS, most useful for well sampled rasters.

    - Desired input data format or formats (e.g., graphics, FITS, XML)
	 FITS 1D, 2D, 3D rasters with WCS
	 FITS binary tables
	 Ascii "tables"

    - Other comments
1D and 2D currently have more applications than 3D
FITS binary tables format and support under development
Will be evolved to support VO spectral standards
