Hi Bruno,

One source of information is the Sept 22 TCG meeting. The CSP topic was discussed and I wrote down a few notes.

https://wiki.ivoa.net/twiki/bin/view/IVOA/IvoaTCG-2020-09-22

CSP discussion - TCG discussion on CSP noted that a stronger CSP presence could help the TCG and user community as a whole. Specific areas of note were: spectral DM implementations do not have a science priority connection
to help implementers. There needs to be more involvement with support of tutorials, docs, and a connection to the community we're serving. Also noted that we are working from the bottom up using VO simple things - we need to reach the community to get a better
sense of their uses and issues. Also noted that there needs to be a stronger connection with the TCG Interest groups and that the IG needs to participate in the CSP. JE will work to express to the CSP and Exec that we're requesting a review of the CSP mandate/activity.
Time to find and read the CSP mandate. May be time to recommend some changes in their charge at this stage of IVOA to make the group more relevant.

I use mandate in the notes above where I should have said ‘charter’. And not to put my words on others, I’ll switch to to my personal input below.

I believe the IVOA is in need of a science group that works actively for the IVOA. Looking forward to the next set of tasks is important, but more importantly is the engagement with the science community, bringing
implementers and testers to the WG/IGs (we need them now for new standards), staying in touch to shepherd the communities needs and feedback. And even helping with documentation, use cases, science community education and more (or at least a subset of these
activities.)

In terms of how the group can work, I’ll put on my manager hat. It is not for just the Ch/V Ch to make happen, but for the group to meet regularly, set priorities and actions, and follow up on those activities to ensure there is forward movement.
It’s a committee, not a 1 or 2 person responsibility and it takes a committee to cover the ground of the CSP if we do it in earnest. Does what I say mean there should be a CSP structure to define CSP/IGs so more people feel the responsibility to get things
done and report?? I guess that’s a question we can ask. There are also term limits in the CSP charter (3 yrs) - all other groups use them to keep things fresh, I think the CSP should too.

The TCG relies on an active CSP. Our work is for Astronomers. After the TCG meeting I felt an obligation to start the conversation given my role on the TCG. I’m happy to clarify anything here that needs further discussion. I’m
also willing to help out. You’ve done a good job - this is not about you.

I was undecided whether to include the list or reply to just you. Given it’s an internal list I took the chance and went to the group so the others could see the response and also chime in.

Dear Chenzhou,

Thanks for your message and apologies that I could not attend the last exec meeting due to a conflict with a presentation in a workshop. I fully agree with the need of reinvigorating the CSP with new members and probably by appointing a new chair and vice-chair
as well. We have successfully championed the connection with the astropy group first and then the resuscitation of the Radioastronomy Interest Group but it is true that it obtaining further involvement with the astronomical community and with the TCG has been
challenging due to the members’ workload in their respective projects.

As your request, besides the conversation at the exec, I will also initiate an email discussion with the CSP members about the possible updates in membership and leadership and report back at the next exec telecon, hopefully before the interop meeting itself.
Depending on the outcome of the discussions at the exec and at the CSP we can then decide on the contents of the CSP presentation at the Interop.

Best regards,

Dear IVOA Exec,

At the telecon yesterday, the Exec discussed the need of the CSP to be more active in its relation with the TCG and with the scientific community to understand the need of the community and where IVOA has to focus in the future work.

The Exec agreed that CSP chart might need some revision as well as a vice – chair could be appointed to help/coordinate with the chair to increase activity and presence in the astronomy community. The Exec agreed that a presentation of the CSP at the next
Interop meeting would be important asking for inputs to the community and reach a broader group of scientists.

I take the action to email the Exec to request feedback about possible changes of the CSP chart as only 16 members were present at the telecon.

The TCG will hold a telecon on 10/29 to continue with Interop meeting organization. I will also ask Bruno Merin about a presentation at the Interop meeting.

Please send your feedback and comments to the exec mailing list or to me. Thank you.
