Hi, Ada.
Thanks for organizing and sending the intro slides.
I tried to look at the slides from the point of view of a beginner (which I
still feel I am!). Here are some comments:
Slide 6. It's not clear what the first bullet is. I presume these are
committees? Perhaps have a bullet that says that, parallel to the
subsequent bullets? Also, it's not clear what the difference is between
committees, working groups, and interest groups? There is an invitation to
participate, but where should a newcomer start? Guessing not the exec?
Slide 9. I find the diagram confusing. Is it a flow chart? Where does it
start? Usually flow charts start at the top, but that seems wrong. Where
would a beginner interact with this process?
Slide 10. Maybe a more concrete example would be helpful?
Slide 13. I don't think this slide is very helpful. Most of it is hard to
read. The title has a lot of acronyms that a beginner would have no hope of
understanding: UCD, utypes, VOUnits, datalink
Slide 14. The pics at the top are great! Would consider focusing on those
more than the screenshot of the standards document which currently takes up
most of the slide.
Slide 15. I feel like this is going a bit fast for a beginner. We are
defining ST-MOC by saying "space-time multi-order coverage map" but I think
a beginner wouldn't know what that is.
Slide 16. I'm not sure this slide is useful to a newcomer.
Slide 18. Again, I think the screenshot is not adding much to the slide.
Slide 19. Even when I zoom in on my big screen, the images on this slide
are blurry. Reading the words, I don't understand what this slide is about.
Slide 22. There are a lot of acronyms on this slide. What does REC mean?
Recommendation? What does "Container --> XML" mean? I don't think you mean
a software container, like a Docker image, right? Maybe format is a better
word? What is the difference between "VOEvent" and "VO Transport Protocol"?
Is one a data model and the other a standard for a service? What is a
VOEvents validation library? What is TOM?
Slide 23-26. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be learning from these
slides.
Not in the slides, but might be useful: Key terms that might come up in
subsequent presentations? What background do we expect newcomers to have?
Just going down the slides, I wouldn't expect everyone to know what
registry, semantics, interoperability, TAP are if they haven't lived in the
VO world already. However, if they are already people building pipelines
and services (just not VO) then we can expect them to know e.g. metadata,
ADQL. If they have mostly just done research, they might not have a good
understanding of even these concepts.
