[csp] astropy - IVOA synergy session at Victoria next week

Hi Bruno et al.,

I’ve checked in and it sounds like neither Adam nor Tom R can make it (Tom *might*, but he can’t be sure, so we shouldn’t count on him giving the talk). I also won’t be able to join myself until 9:30.

That said, Brigitta Sipocz (the other maintainer for astroquery) can make that time (I included her on this email). So hopefully she’ll be available to answer more technical/detailed questions I might not know the answer to regarding astroquery…?

Thanks very much Erik!

We can certainly schedule your presentation at 9:30 but it would be probably better if it can start at 9:00 to keep the flow. We have a lot of flexibility for scheduling the session so if you can tell me on Tuesday or Wednesday what would be your final preference, I can work around it.

It also depends on whether either Tom Robitaille, Adam Ginsburg and/or Sébastien Fabbro might want to contribute to the session, which would be of course great too. The sooner you can give me your confirmation, the sooner I can arrange a final version of the agenda.

Thanks again,

Bruno
ps: we can probably use skype, which worked well for our telecon the other day. I would like to propose that we all connect half an hour before the actual talks to make sure everything works and have time to troubleshoot any problems we find. Would that be OK?

Hi Bruno,

Ah, if it's Thursday I can do 930-1030 just fine. I *might* be able to also be there for the 9-930 block but won't know until I can check in with other folks Tuesday.

I could probably do either of the talks you mentioned (as I have existing versions of such talks), but the overview one is probably a bit easier for me. (Although I realize that might conflict with the times you gave)...

Hi all again,

My mistake, the astropy session is on Thursday 31st of May, not on Friday 1st of May as I had wrongly written (thanks Tom Donaldson for catching that!). I hope you can confirm ASAP your participation or not to arrange the final agenda and test the remote connection etc. These science sessions are typically one of the highlights of the meeting so I think it would really pay off to participate, give good presentations there and have a nice discussion afterwards.

So could you please let me know as soon as you can whether you would be available to give a short remote presentation about astropy this Thursday? If so, what would be the title and how long would you like to make it?

Many thanks again,

Bruno

Dear all,

As discussed, I managed to get a slot starting at 9:00 Canada time (PDT) on Friday June the 1st to discuss the astropy-IVOA synergies at the upcoming meeting in Victoria. If I am not mistaken 9 am PDT corresponds to 12 pm at Baltimore (EDT), 5 pm at London (BST) and 7 pm in Greece (EEST).

We had discussed that it would be very useful whether at least some of you could join remotely to present what astropy is about to the IVOA community (83 people<http://wiki.ivoa.net/twiki/bin/view/IVOA/RegPage> at this meeting), including most of the active software engineers in the alliance. We could then follow that by a short discussion on how to create bonds between both communities for everyone’s benefit. I understand that Sébastien will be in person at the meeting, which is of course even better.

You can find a first very draft agenda of the session here<http://wiki.ivoa.net/twiki/bin/view/IVOA/InterOpMay2018CSP> and of the full event here<http://wiki.ivoa.net/twiki/bin/view/IVOA/InterOpMay2018>. If you were available and interested we would be delighted to listen to you and I will arrange the local connection and the corresponding test to make sure everything works smoothly at the session itself. For the discussion I will request a spider phone such that you can hear people’s comments remotely too of course.

So, would you be able to confirm to me whether you can or cannot participate as soon as you read this message? That way I can make the final adjustments to the agenda for the meeting itself asap too. Of course any other idea you might have is very much welcome as well so feel free to propose any alternatives that might work best from your point of view.

Many thanks in advance if you could share some of your time with us next week and for your time reading this long email.

Best regards,

Bruno
