Hi,

For your thoughts (following the discussion on PT3 at IVOA Malta
Interop concerning the potential impact of a minor or major
breakdown in standard compatibility)

To illustrate our difficulty in imposing a client update on the
community due to an incompatibility with a new version of the data
servers. Here are the usage statistics for AladinDesktop versions
over the last 5 years.

And when we look closely at who is still using older versions of
Aladin, we can find some broad categories such as Aladin embedded in
APT, or some VO students exploring our collection of VO tutorials.

So I suppose that a large breakdown would have to have a really
significant benefit to justify such an impact, especially from a
user/mission/project perspective. And in any case, should be managed
with a several years compatibility window.
